Why GHK-Cu Formats Are Not Interchangeable

A companion question to the grade question keeps coming up, and it is a better question: if two products both say GHK-Cu on the label, can you reason from one to the other?

You cannot, and the reasons are specific rather than hand-wavy. A finished topical formulation and a sealed vial of lyophilized material are documented differently, measured on different units, and stable under different conditions. Each of those is enough on its own to break the comparison.

The container holds different things

Lyophilized GHK-Cu is, in the ordinary case, the freeze-dried complex and very little else. A finished topical formulation is a formulation: water, an emulsifier or surfactant system, a preservative system, a thickener, a buffer to hold pH, often a chelating agent, and a list of other actives. The peptide complex is one line on that list.

Those other ingredients are not inert with respect to a metal complex. GHK-Cu is a tripeptide holding a copper(II) ion by coordination, and coordination chemistry is condition-dependent. Whether the copper stays bound to the peptide depends on pH and on what else in the container has an appetite for copper. Common cosmetic chelators exist precisely to sequester trace metals; that is their job in the formula. So the presence of GHK-Cu on an ingredient list establishes what was added to the batch. It does not by itself establish what species is in the jar afterwards, and there is no way to work that out from the outside.

The numbers are on different units

This is the most common error and the easiest to avoid.

A research vial is labelled by mass of material in the container — a stated number of milligrams, which a certificate’s assay result can confirm or contradict directly. A cosmetic is labelled, when it is labelled quantitatively at all, as a percentage of the finished formulation by weight. Those are not convertible. Percent by weight of a whole formulation and milligrams of complex in a sealed vial answer different questions, and neither converts into the other without knowing the fill weight, the density, and the actual as-manufactured content — three things that are not printed on either package.

Anyone doing arithmetic across the two is producing a number that does not correspond to anything measured.

The documents cover different objects

A certificate of analysis on a raw material is a batch report about that material: identity, purity against a stated limit, assay against label, contaminant ceilings. It says nothing about any finished product later made from it.

The documentation behind a finished cosmetic is a different category of paperwork altogether. It concerns the formulation as a whole — its stability over time, its preservative system, its safety assessment as a finished good. A raw-material certificate does not substitute for that, and that documentation does not report a peptide purity number you can compare against a vial.

So the honest position is that these are two different documents about two different objects. A seller who offers a raw-material certificate as evidence about a finished formulation is answering a question nobody asked.

Stability is not the same problem in both formats

The last difference is physical. GHK-Cu is not stable indefinitely in solution. Copper ions catalyse hydrolysis, so the complex in an aqueous system degrades on a meaningfully faster timescale than the same material sealed as a dry powder — hours-to-weeks rather than months-to-years, depending on temperature. That is why the lyophilized form is dry in the first place: removing the water removes the reaction.

This has a direct consequence for reading labels. A dry powder with a long stated shelf life and a water-based product with a long stated shelf life are not making comparable claims, because the second one is the harder claim by a wide margin. Where you see an ambient long-duration shelf life on a copper peptide in solution, the useful question is what stability data supports it and whether the water and the peptide are actually kept apart until use.

What to take from this

There is no conversion factor between these formats. There is no document that spans them. If you need a stated purity and assay on a defined batch, that is what a raw-material certificate is for, and you should read the actual numbers on it rather than a grade word.
